2005 92 mins
Dir Marco Turco

A powerful, mind-boggling documentary, based on the eponymous book by Alexander Stille about the Sicilian Mafia andthe heroic prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino -who brought hundreds of criminals to trial beginning in the 1980s(in 1982 there was a Mafia killing in Palermo every three days),until they themselves were murdered in 1992.Their work galvanised public outrage as Mafia foot soldierstestified in court that they threw bodies into vats of acid to liquefythem. The violence they described was embodied by the no-holdsbarredphotographs of death in the streets, made by LetiziaBattaglia, who appears in the film. The Mafia’s pervasive hold on Italy is documented here, as well asthe entrenched corruption of the nation’s politicians, dating backto the end of the Second World War, when Mafia figures wereinstalled in positions of power to counteract the growth of theItalian Communist Party.

Primo Levi’s Journey / La strada di Levi (15)

2006, 91 mins
Dir Davide Ferrario

Primo Levi's If This Is A Man offers an unforgettable sense of theburden of guilt carried by those who survived the horrors of theconcentration camps. When Levi was liberated from Auschwitz bythe Red Army in January 1945 his long, meandering journey hometo Turin took more than a year.Davide Ferrario's acclaimed documentary retraces that journeythrough Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldavia, Romania, Hungaryand Germany. He skillfully contrasts what Levi would have seenwith the present day issues of prejudice and nationalism that scarEurope and the countries that emerged from the ashes of the oldSoviet Union.Primo Levi's Journey emerges as a provocative confrontationwith contemporary European identity and a moving testimonyto the power of Levi's life and work.

Simply Beautiful / Bellissime (12)

2005, 180mins
Dir Giovanna Gagliard

Bellissime is a collection of film, photographs, songs and femalevoices which cover the role of women in the major historicalevents of the 20th century. A century which specifically from the1970s to today often shows the woman as the protagonist: fromthe “single mothers” proud of their “irregular” conjugal life, tothe adolescents in miniskirts, to the feminists who went on themarch in the 1960s. Making their voices felt are the great womenin politics, like Tina Anselmi who demanded “good institutionallaws” in favour of equal rights between men and women. Thereare also the voices of victims like Gemma Capra whose family lifewas ripped apart after the assassination of police commissionerCalabresi, and other women in power such as Barbara Contini,Governor of Nassirya in Iraq after Saddam. It is also about customs which begin to change. The aspirationfor an entirely new female beauty, where a woman is capable ofcombining her emancipation with elegance – the TV which shapesus, the movies which question us, and the songs which speak ofour most hidden desires.
