Night Bus / Notturno bus(12A)
2007, 104 mins
Dir Davide Marengo

The dark beauty of night-time Rome provides the atmosphericbackdrop to this spirited film noir romp from director DavideMarengo. An award-winning maker of documentaries, shortfilms and music videos, Marengo brings confidence and styleto this polished mixture of crime caper and odd couple comedythat enjoyed considerable commercial success in Italy earlierthis year.Valerio Mastandrea stars as Franz, a bus driver with a passion forpoker and a dreary life that seems to provide him with very littleexcitement. Then he meets Giovanna Mezzogiorno's Leila, a womanwho might have chosen trouble as her middle name. A stunningbeauty, a wily hustler and a chronic liar, Leila could lead anyone fromthe path of righteousness. That may explain how the duo wind upembroiled in a series of murders and completely out of their depth.

Enrico Lo Verso is Mario Brioni, adedicated teacher who refuses to give up on the boy and visits everyday after work to allow Salvatore to continue with his education. The lad's greatest struggle comes with a well-meaning social workerwho decides that he would be better off in an orphanage.Notable as the first Disney feature produced in Italy, Salvatore is setin the director's home town of Pachino and is not for the cynical butbuilds into the kind of emotional crowd-pleaser that only the hardestof hearts will be able to resist.

The True Legend of Tony Vilar / La vera leggenda
                                                           di Tony Vilar (12)

93 min, 2006
Dir Giuseppe Gagliardi

Using a tongue-in-cheek mockumentary style, this half-true, halfimaginedtale is based on the story of real-life singer Tony Vilar.Born in Italy, he later moved to Argentina and became one of themost popular crooners in 1960s Latin America, then mysteriouslydisappeared, leaving a faint trail apparently leading to New York City.Like the title says, the story of Tony Vilar is half real, and half legend.Historically, he is a real-life singing star who was born in Calabria,Italy, moved to South America and reached the pinnacle of hissuccess in Buenos Aires in the 1960s, before mysteriouslydisappearing after a fan pulled off his toupee. Totally humiliated, hevanished from the stage without a trace. But a legend grew up aroundthe disappearance, and director Gagliardi takes on that legend with amusical tale about fictional Calabrian singer Peppe Voltarelli, whohas always venerated the myth of Tony Vilar. Setting out to learn whathas become of the former crooner, Peppe’s journey leads him fromArgentine record shops and tango bars to shady Brooklyn hangouts, and finally to a used car dealership in the Bronx.Gagliardi, continuing to explore the theme of the Italian Diaspora, manages to ably confuse documentary and fiction and enlivens itall by a broad cast of improbable characters. A whimsical road tripfilm made with a great deal of light-hearted imagination, The TrueLegend of Tony Vilar is a prime an example of the dynamism comingout of southern Italy.
