Caravaggio
(18)
2007, 130 min
Dir Angelo Longoni
Photographed by master cinematographer Vittorio
Storaro(Apocalypse Now, The Last Emperor,
Reds), Caravaggio depicts aportrait of a
constantly conflicted and flawed artist
trying to dowhat he was placed on this earth
to do.Alessio Boni, best known as the troubled
younger brother in TheBest of Youth, plays
Michelangelo “Michele” Merisi,
born into ahumble family in the town of
Caravaggio (from which the futureartist
would derive his professional moniker).
Cursed with aviolent temper, Michele becomes
as well known for his brawlingas for his
art, frequenting the seamier side of Rome
and using itsprostitutes and thieves as
models, even for his religious paintings.Eventually,
his art creates a fervent group of admirers,
while hispersonal life establishes an equally
dedicated battery of enemies.Director Angelo
Longoni sets up a complex and revealinginterplay
between the artist and his era. He shows
how muchCaravaggio drew from painterly practices
of his day and how heeffectively went beyond
them. Boni gives a great, full-bodiedperformance
as the street brawler and father of one
of the mostremarkable bodies of work in
the entire artistic canon. The filmis sprawling,
ambitious and stunning. |

Roses / Le rose del deserto(15)
2006, 102 min
Dir Marion Monicelli
Mario Monicelli has created some of the
finest examples ofthat Italian tradition
of “serious comedy” - pointed
socialcommentaries that double you over
with laughter - in such worksas Big Deal
on Madonna Street, The Organizer and La
GrandeGuerra. For his new film Monicelli
returns to one of his favoritethemes, the
absurdity of war.During the Second World
War, an Italian medical unit waits in theLibyan
desert for what they are sure will be their
victorious marchinto British-controlled
Egypt. Gradually, it dawns on them that
thewar isn’t going as their superiors
have said. Monicelli assembleda great ensemble
cast for the film, including Michele Placido,Alessandro

The Lark Farm / La masseria delle allodole(15)
2006, 122 mins
Dir Paolo Taviani, Vittorio Taviani
Returning to the big screen after a lengthy
absence, the Tavianibrothers have crafted
a deeply felt adaptation of the AntoniaArslan
novel on the Armenian genocide of 1915.
An all-star casttease out the human emotions
of sweeping historical events thatremain
intensely controversial more than ninety
years later. The story begins in the charming
country estate of Armineh(Arsinee Khanjian)
and Aram Avakian (Tcheky Karyo) as theyignore
the gathering clouds of conflict and prepare
for thearrival of Aram's brother from Venice.
Then, a Turkishmilitary detachment arrives,
slaughters every male member ofthe family
and rounds up the women for a long march
into theSyrian desert. During the march,
spirited beauty Nunik (Paz Vega)falls in
love with a dashing Turkish officer (Alessandro
Preziosi)but even friends in high places
seem unlikely to save her and theother women
from certain death.Beautifully crafted,
The Lark Farm is a timely, thought-provokingexamination
of a holocaust that history has chosen to
forget.

The Missing Star / La stella che non c’è

2006, 103 mins
Dir Gianni Amelio
The latest film from IFF favourite Gianni
Amelio could almostbe called Lost In Translation
Italian style. Sergio Castellitto starsas
Vincenzo, a Naples engineer who ventures
to rural Chinaprompted by his concerns over
the safety of a blast furnace.Aided by translator
Lia Hua (Tai Ling) he embarks on a stubborn, obsessive
quest that takes him deeper into the country
andbecomes more about the tentative relationship
between themthan reaching his goal.Told
with all the compassion and tenderness we
have come to expectfrom the director of
Lamerica (1994) and The Keys To The House
/Le chiavi di casa (2004), The Missing Star
is a soulful romance thatunfolds in some
spectacular locations that provide stunning
glimpsesof a China that is largely unfamiliar
to western eyes.Beautifullfy made and sensitively
handled, the narrative blossomsinto a poignant
exploration of one couple's attempt to bridge
thecultural divide between West and East. |

Napoleon and Me / Io e Napoleone(12A)
2006, 104mins.
Dir Paolo Virzì
Napoleon's exile on the Italian island of
Elba is seen throughthe eyes of a young
teacher who reviles the former emperor(played
by Daniel Auteuil), but must serve as his
librarian inthis light-hearted costume drama
that's as fast-paced as anoperetta and spiked
with Tuscan humour.Featuring Monica Bellucci
as the intriguing Baroness, afloozy who
is anxious over turning 40 and aggressively
courts20-something men like Martino who
will remind her of howbeautiful she is.
As Napoleon, French acting legend Daniel
Auteuilis more than credible, walking a
foot shorter but somehow moreimposing than
the bodyguards and hangers-on who follow
hisevery step around the island.Virzì
(a previous IFF guest and a popular director
known forcomedies with a sharp social edge),
is in top form here. Comicside stories make
generous use of the Tuscan dialect and accents, yet
there are some genuinely emotional moments,
too, notablya jewel-like cameo by Margarita
Lozano as Napoleon's formernursemaid. Locations
on Elba deliciously bring the period tolife
in this lighthearted comedy based on Ernesto
Ferrero'sprize-winning historical novel

GARIBALDI CELEBRATION
1860 (12)
1934, 72 mins
Dir Alessandro Blasetti.
The date of the title, 1860 is considered
by many, even tothis day, as the forerunner
of the long season of Italianneo-realism.
The Sicilian patriots, who had retreated
intothe mountains, awaited the arrival of
Garibaldi's troops tofree the island from
Bourbon rule. Travelling from Sicilywhich
was nervously preparing for the landing
of the“Thousand”, the shepherd
Carmeliddu (Giuseppe Gulino)reached the
peninsula on behalf of Father Costanzo(Gianfranco
Giachetti), a friar who helped the rebels. The
purpose of his mission is to reach Liguria
and ensurethat Garibaldi’s expedition
is real, like the hope of thoseawaiting
him, in this case encouraging the combatants
tourgently intervene. During his tiring
journey, Carmeliddudiscovers and verifies
the torment of a changing Italy, andthe
pain of those who are fighting so that “Italy
is created”.In the meantime his wife,
Gesuzza (Aida Bellia), who hadremained in
Sicily, is captured and sentenced to death
bythe Bourbon police who, in the disorder,
had implementeda violent campaign of repression
aimed at discouragingthe rebels.However,
she was saved by a provident amnesty thatreached
Naples, by order of the King. Unaware of
anythingand concerned for the hardship of
Garibaldi’s troops,Carmeliddu continues
his mission and lands at Quartowith the
Thousand, realising the determination that
drovethe leader and the Italians who had
left their homes andcome from all over the
country to join him. After the historic and
arduous victory at Calatafimi,the shepherd
is reached on the battlefield by his wife, who
feared for his fate. In the enthusiasm of
the meeting,Carmeliddu tells the woman of
Garibaldi’s immortaltestimony: On
that day, Italy was created. |
